英文摘要
We have witnessed the rise of a new paradigm in bioscience, which put biological networks in the focus of scientific study. Of particular importance are signaling networks as the "CPU" of cells. These signaling pathways tightly regulate cellular processes and are finely tuned to respond to external stimuli. The rise of increasingly sophisticated signaling networks in our evolutionary history enabled the increasing complexity of higher organisms. How these networks arose in our evolutionary history has thus far not undergone rigorous study and the mechanisms at play are unknown. However, it is clear that signaling networks have been adapting to different evolutionary pressures and have undergone extensive rewiring, thereby enabling evolutionary progress.
