The rapid pace of growth of wireless networks, their enormous data usage, and the scarcity of the available radio resources are placing stringent demands on the design of air interface for future wireless systems. The proposed research envisions a novel wireless network architecture in which compact mini-base-stations with wireless backhaul are densely deployed in order to provide better coverage and higher throughput to mobile subscribers. This increase in base-station deployment density, however, also brings in a novel set of design challenges, particularly in terms of the provisioning of high-speed wireless data in the backhaul and the control and mitigation of wireless interference. The goal of this proposal is to develop sophisticated optimization methods for wireless backhaul transceivers. In particular, the proposed research aims to develop novel and practical beamforming and power optimization methods, coordinated across multiple cells and specifically developed to minimize or even to eliminate interference, as a means to achieve higher data capacity and increased system reliability for future wireless backhaul networks. The feasibility and practicality of the beamforming and power optimization algorithms will be a main focus of the proposed research.
