Cereals and grains used for animal feed can become contaminated with fungi, which release toxins into the feed. These toxins at low levels can have numerous deleterious effects on animal growth and reproduction. In cattle, contaminated feed can result in decreased ovarian activity and thus lower fertility. How fungal toxins decrease fertility in cattle is only partly understood. In Eastern Canada, the most common toxin is called DON, but the effect of this toxin on reproduction in ruminants has not been studied. In this research project, we will determine the effects of DON on ovarian function using a combination of in-vitro and in-vivo cattle models.
