New regulations tightening the discharge of ammonia from municipal wastewater treatment systems require a year-round good performance of the nitrification process (which removes ammonia by converting to nitrate). It is well know that this process has reduced efficiencies at lower temperatures (<10°C), which forces designers to increase the size of activated sludge wastewater treatment plants and leads to higher construction as well as operation and maintenance costs. Up until now, it has been common practice to assume for design purposes that the influent does not contain any nitrifying microorganisms. This conservative assumption may lead to overdesigning facilities. However, this assumption was never properly investigated.
