Biodiversity hotspots that coexist with farmland are often threatened by movement of phosphorus off farmland into waterways and into vegetation adapted to low phosphorus soils. Strategic use of phosphorus-resistant native perennial plants may aid biodiversity preservation by retaining phosphorus in farmland soils.
