The recent power outages in the GTA in the winter of 2013-2014 were devastating to households using natural gas heating because these systems largely require electricity to operate and generate heat. Next Grids proposed co-generation platform would guard against this risk as power and heat would be generated on site simultaneously. More generally, this innovation aims to alleviate commercial and residential energy costs. In particular, this project aims to design, assemble, test and validate a high efficiency heating and electricity cogeneration platform conceived of by the industry partner; Next Grid. At the core of this innovation is a microturbine called green turbine. The green turbine is a small light weight turbo generator, with a relatively high efficiency and a compact steam turbine with an output in the range of 1-15 kW. The economic benefits of this project are potentially 3 fold. 1. Next Grid will enjoy increased sales and profitability which will cascade into more hirings. 2. Commercial and residential end users will enjoy cheaper energy costs. 3. Through potential feed in tariff agreements, utilities authorities stand to gain another source of sustainable energy production.
