Organic management practices for quinoa production in Ontario

Quinoa production is primarily centered in Bolivia and Peru. Although production in Canada is variable, certain provinces have successfully been able to grow quinoa, 80 percent of which is grown organically, on a commercial scale. Katan Kitchens has emerged as a leader in research and development of quinoa in Ontario. Existing research has shown that quinoa is a viable crop for Ontario, but that production improvements are needed to enhance yields in an organic agriculture setting. Primary production challenges include nitrogen fertility and weed management strategies, particularly in dealing with Lamb's-quarters. Our goals are to (i) determine the optimum rate of MSW, and (ii) assess the weed management strategies for organic quinoa production in Ontario.
