ON Semiconductor is a large design and manufacturer of electronic components that are incorporated into a variety of end user equipment including the latest Smart phones. ON Semiconductor has a design and wafer fabrication manufacturing facility in Burlington (Sound Design Technologies Inc), Ontario where it develops and produces a unique component for Smart phones: Passive Tunable Integrated Circuit (PTIC). The function of the PTIC is to dynamically change its capacitance so that a tuning circuit can optimally match the impedance of a cell phone antenna. The antenna itself changes its impedance based on the band in which it is transmitting/receiving or the use case condition in which it is being used - i.e., holding the phone to your head will have a different effect on the antenna then having the phone in your pocket.
