Organophosphates, including Sarin gas and VX nerve agent, irreversibly bind acetylcholinesterase (BChE) and induce human paralysis and death within minutes. Current methods isolate BChE from human serum, which cannot produce the quantity required at reasonable costs for prophylactic and acute use in the Canadian and US military. However, our collaborator PlantForm Corporation can produce gram quantities of BChE using its plant based bio-reactors. In our collaboration with PlantForm will use biochemical engineering of sugars on the plant produced BChe which will then enable the protein to stay in the body longer thus protecting people longer from these deadly nerve agents.
