英文摘要
This research addresses directly Canada's specific needs for developing technologies to remediate sites contaminated by produced water spills. It is targeted at the remediation of soils contaminated by produced water resulting from oil and gas exploration and production. Produced water represents the single largest waste stream from the oil and gas industry. Numerous sites are identified across Western Canada that have been contaminated by historic process water spills as a result of upstream oil and gas production. The spills typically contain a very high level of sodium chloride, which poses significant risks to ecological habitats, drinking water supplies and agricultural lands. Local hydrogeologic conditions (e.g., low groundwater flow and recharge) can pose significant constraints for remediation, and many of these sites are in remote locations. Matrix Solutions Inc. is a global leader in developing environmental engineering solutions. In collaboration with Matrix Solutions, who has committed a generous in-kind contribution at this stage, this Engage project aims at developing low-energy reverse osmosis custom-designed for remediation of the contaminated sites via cleaning of extracted water coupled with re-infiltration.
