The proposed collaborative project with Alphora Research involves the development of synthetic processes for manufacturing precursors for a group of chemical compounds called halichondrin polycyclic macrolides, which have potential as cancer drugs. These anti-tumour substances are related to halichondrin B, a natural product that was isolated from a marine sponge. Health Canada and the FDA have recently approved the fully synthetic analog eribulin for treatment of certain metastatic breast cancers; however, the manufacturing process is not yet efficient for this and related substances. Following up with our recent Engage Grant, we are continuing our efforts in improving the methodologies for some of the steps in the preparation of this medicinally important group of compounds.
