英文摘要
One of the greatest challenges of the biodiesel industry today is identifying effective uses of glycerol, a chemical by-product of the manufacturing process. Increasing biodiesel production in recent years has saturated the refined glycerol market, resulting in tumbling prices and consequently, smaller profits. Atlantic Biodiesel is a state-of-the art renewable biodiesel facility in Niagara, Ontario that seeks to gain a competitive edge by developing an innovative, value-added application of glycerol. This collaborative research will investigate and optimize a process to convert glycerol to glyceric acid, a high-priced component of biodegradable plastic. With the potential to deliver both economic and environmental benefits, this technology will provide an ideal solution to a global industry challenge. Production and use of clean-burning renewable biofuels in Canada remain the best means to extend our oil supply, while protecting our environment. As such, supporting innovation and investment in Canada's renewable biofuels industry is critical for ensuring its future economic and environmental prosperity.
