My group and I propose to build a high-speed feedback trap to study fundamental problems in statistical physics. Over the past five years, my group has developed a way to use feedback traps to quantitatively study motion of a charged particle in a "virtual potential" that may be arbitrarily manipulated. We have used this trap to carry out a test of Landauer's principle, which states that the erasure of one bit of information inevitably requires work of at least kT ln 2 per bit. This fundamental principle linking information theory and thermodynamics was untested for 50 years following its introduction. It is also important because it resolves the challenges to the second law of thermodynamics posed by Maxwell's demon.
