Freshwater wells to support research in evolutionary genomics, physiology, and aquaculture, at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre

The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre supports world-class research on the west-coast of Vancouver Island. Research on anadromous and freshwater fishes is a growing part of our profile. Recent investments by NSERC and Howard Hughes Medical Institution have created two stickleback rearing facilities in addition to the freshwater facilities already on site. This places substantial demands on our freshwater supply, which currently is provided by chlorinated community water. Unit costs of community water have doubled in recent years. Spikes in chlorination levels have caused fish mortality in the past. Future research will include multi-generational breeding experiments that require fish to be kept for years. Any mass mortality event could destroy years of work. The community water system is also fragile and could easily be destroyed by an earthquake, tsunami, or errant boater.
