The Bamfield Marine and Sciences Centre (BMSC) is a world-class research facility located in Barkley Sound adjacent to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve on the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Five western research universities (Victoria, British Columbia, Simon Fraser,Calgary, and Alberta) established BMSC as a partnership in 1970 at the request of the National Research Council (NRC) to create a national facility capable of supporting coastal and marine research of the highest caliber. BMSC is internationally recognized as among the very best such facilities in the world. No other facility offers researchers such a diverse array of organisms and habitats alongside such an extensive and versatile infrastructure. External referees have described BMSC as a "jewel". A specialized seawater system supplies 3000L of seawater/min to 3000 m2 of lab space, and more than 100 additional outdoor holding facilities. Specialized research equipment includes: 1) A 12 m flume with Particle Imaging Velocimeter (PIV) 2) A confocal fluorescence microscope 3) A scintillation counter 4) An Atomic Absorption Spectrometer 5) A diverse fleet of vessels, including a ROV. 6) Standard lab equipment ranging from PCR to nets and rubber boots. 7) Incubators, freezers. The entire infrastructure is supported by backup power. The remote setting of this campus means that BMSC has to be self-sufficient. BMSC has a full-time Research Coordinator, IT administrator, Animal Care Coordinator, Dive Safety Officer, and 2 boat skippers to ensure that the facility is always in a state of readiness for arriving researchers. Additional staff are hired seasonally to meet peak demands. Staff ensure that researchers can carry out their projects safely while adhering to regulatory requirements that pertain to research activities. BMSC is the only university-based marine research facility on the Pacific coast and is available to researchers 365 days a year. BMSC hosts researchers from every province except PEI and will exceed 7000 researcher days during 2016 the equivalent of nearly 20 year-round researchers. Over the last 5 years, almost 100 different groups have conducted research at BMSC. Research use has increased in each of the last 5 years. In 2016, BMSC hosted 32 principal investigators from 15 Canadian universities and 5 international universities. These groups included 10 postdoctoral, 41 graduate, and 18 undergraduate researchers. BMSC supports research that ranges from the comparative biochemistry of fish, to the recruitment of rockfish on the Pacific Coast. Over the last 10 years research at BMSC has generated more than 700 peer-reviewed publications. BMSC will continue to expand our knowledge of coastal habitats and organisms which provides diverse economic and cultural values to Canadians. The 45 year history of BMSC allows it to be a window on global change because it has the before picture.
