Kraft is the dominant chemical pulping process in Canada. In this process, kraft lignin is incinerated along with back liquor (i.e. spent liquor of pulping) in the recovery cycle of the mill, and thus kraft lignin is generally under-utilized. However, value-added chemicals can be produced from kraft lignin. Recently, Domtar initiated a commercial scale kraft lignin production plant.
