This project will investigate a novel method to increase the power of radar pulses and their signal-to-noise (SNR). The technology to be developed has the potential to completely revolutionize radar systems for air traffic control (ATC) by reducing the transmitted power of radar signals from 5 kW to ~0.3 kW without compromising the radar's detection range. This, in turn, would result in a dramatic reduction in the cost of the radar because expensive vacuum tube power amplifiers can potentially be replaced with power-combined solid-state amplifiers. Deliverables from this project to Capella Aerospace, the industrial partner, will include: a technical report containing: an assessment of the usefulness of method ('yes/no' on whether to pursue it further); effectiveness of the method for improving SNR; detailed circuit diagrams on the tested prototype; key
