The accumulation of snowfall and ice can pose physical and health hazards to home residents. Shoveling snow can also be hazardous and even fatal among both adults and children. Heated driveway systems, also called snowmelt systems, are a technological alternative to shoveling, salting, and other snow removal methods. Current snowmelt systems suffer from high costs of materials and installation, and poor efficiency. The industrial partner is currently developing a novel heating system based on conductive polyurethane-cement composites as a retrofit for snowmelt applications. Such a system will require much less material, higher heat transfer efficiency and has the advantage of eliminating the expensive reconstruction required for embedded systems that need to be installed below the paved surface.
