It is of practical importance to develop portable, cost-effective and quantitative analytical tools for the detection of melamine, an imperative environmental contaminant that originates from the industrial manufacture of melamine resins and from the degradation of the pesticide cryomazine. It has been also illegally used for protein adulterations in animal feed and in infant milk powder. The existing methods for melamine determination, such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), are often complex, time consuming and expensive.
