QoS-Aware Management of Cloud Applications

Cloud computing is growing in popularity as a paradigm for providing on-demand resources. Organizations are beginning to see clouds as an economical way of augmenting, or even replacing, their existing IT infrastructure. As a result, many organizations are considering moving their applications and data to a cloud environment in order to take advantage of its flexibility and potential cost savings. We anticipate that the fluidity of, and the competition within, the cloud computing market will grow as the technology matures, which will force providers to adopt a wider range of mechanisms, such as sale prices and incentives, to attract consumers. To take advantage of the evolving cloud market, consumers will demand technologies to evaluate provider offerings effectively and to migrate applications efficiently and transparently between providers. We propose to overcome the complexity and technical challenges associated with cloud application management by developing a novel framework and infrastructure to provide autonomic Quality-of-Service (QoS) aware application management. We will use an applied research methodology in the proposed work. For a given problem, we will develop models and algorithms to solve the problem, implement a proof-of-concept prototype of the solution and then conduct experiments with the prototype to evaluate its veracity and performance. The prototypes constructed will be integrated into a comprehensive Application Broker/Manager framework to support all aspects of QoS-aware application management. The proposed research will address important problems involved in moving IT applications to cloud environments. The work will have significance to a large number of small to medium companies that are currently unable to take advantage of cloud computing because of these obstacles. In conducting the proposed research we plan to provide training for six Ph.D. students, six M.Sc. students and five undergraduate students in the areas of application management, cloud computing and performance evaluation.
