Typical industrial machines are complex and multi-domain dynamic systems. No single "best" approach exists for their design. Building on the existing knowledge, and the past research and experience in machinery development of the applicant and his trainees, the proposed research will make significant original contributions in the development of systematic procedures for the design of automated industrial machinery. Emphasizing the design optimization of multi-domain engineering systems, the developed methodologies will particularly target performance improvements with respect to their production, operation, and control performance. The research outcomes will be implemented in a prototype industrial machine in the applicant's laboratory and rigorously evaluated for further refinement and transfer to Canadian industry. The following research issues will be investigated:
1. Traditional procedures for machinery design are hierarchically separated into topological design and parametric design. Extending this concept, a mechatronic design quotient (MDQ) will be "structured" into a multi-layered hierarchy and methodologies will be developed for its optimization.
2. Dynamic models can significantly benefit the design process and control performance. The linear-graph (LG) approach will be enhanced for this purpose, models for this purpose, particularly as LG provides a direct correspondence to the physical component topology of the system. New basic elements that can benefit "modeling for design and control" will be explored and developed, including a mechanical element analogous to the "memoristor," a refined and general representation of an inertia element, a thermal element analogous to the "inductor," and various nonlinear, distributed-parameter and vector elements. Strategies for model-based "intelligent supervision" of design optimization will be developed.
3. Improved design can reduce the control burden in an automated industrial machine. In this context, "design for control performance" will be explored and integrated into the overall design methodology.
