英文摘要
Physics of plasmas addresses both fundamental problems such as turbulence and magnetic dynamo and a number of applied subjects important for plasma based technologies. The proposed research involves theoretical studies of plasmas, specifically plasma fluctuations and instabilities responsible for anomalous behaviour of magnetically confined plasmas in fusion and space propulsion devices, as well as studies of related problems of metamaterials and plasmonics.
In nature and laboratories, plasmas are most often confined by a magnetic field, which makes them inherently unstable and results in fluctuations and turbulence leading to anomalous plasma transport much exceeding classical values. Plasma turbulence and associated anomalous transport remain one of the greatest scientific challenges hindering further progress of many plasma applications as well as our understanding of fundamental processes in space physics and astrophysics. Our proposed research programs will address fundamental problems in magnetized plasmas, such a plasma rotation and momentum transport in toroidally confined fusion plasmas, fluctuations and anomalous transport in Hall plasmas relevant to space propulsion devices and material processing reactors, as well as selected problems of metamaterials based in magnetoactive media.
Steady progress in controlled fusion is expected over next years as worldwide efforts are intensifying and new fusion devices are being built. It is expected that scientific and technological developments of Hall plasma devices will soon undergo a breakthrough with the resolution of the problem of anomalous resistivity. The plasmonics and metamaterials have emerged as a major area of modern technology. Having made critical contributions to the above areas we are well positioned to partake in these developments. The proposed research program offers unique opportunity to build versatile research expertise in Canada which is directly relevant to a variety of plasma physics-based applications and technologies and easily transferrable to other high technology areas such as plasmonics, photonics, and material science.
