英文摘要
One of the most significant global challenges Canada faces in the 21st century is continuing to maintain a strong economic position in the highly competitive primary metals extraction and processing sector. In order for Canada to continue to play a global leadership role in this sector, it is imperative that novel and state of the art manufacturing techniques for advanced metallic systems are exploited. The proposed research program will continue to build on the applicant's area of research expertise in experimental measurements and the development of knowledge-based process models for advanced metallic products and manufacturing processes. This program will focus on novel clad metallic systems produced via co-casting. For the first time, clad metallic sheet produced via co-casting, creates the possibility of tailoring the surface properties of the sheet relative to its centre in a cost effective way. Current examples of clad aluminum sheet used commercially include: brazing sheet for heat exchangers and Al-clad series of aerospace alloys. Presently, these clad sheets are produced via a costly roll bonding technology whereby the two sheets are rolled together under high pressure to create the clad sheet. This research program will create and develop a range of clad aluminum sheet products and measure how these clad products respond to industrially relevant thermo-mechanical treatments such as homogenization, hot/cold rolling and final heat treatment. In particular emphasis will be placed on understanding the metallurgical reactions that occur close to the interface in these systems and the interaction of solute across the interface during manufacturing operations.
