Proactive integrated transportation system managements - development and evaluation of algorithms and methods

Currently the management of transportation systems is typically reactive (i.e. strategies are implemented only after an event occurs) and fragmented (i.e. different facilities and modes are managed independently). This proposal describes a 5-year research program that builds on the applicant's previous and existing research strengths and focuses on developing and evaluating algorithms and methods required for proactive and integrated transportation management. The research program consists of 4 main themes as follows: 1. Traffic state estimation and prediction using advanced and conventional sensor data. 2. Advanced public transit service modelling. 3. Travel behaviour monitoring using advanced crowd sourcing techniques. 4. Transportation system reliability - measurement and modelling. The overall goal of this research program is to extend the current frontiers of transportation system management capabilities. This will be accomplished by developing algorithms and models that make use of new sources of transportation data that are becoming available as a result of the adoption and deployment of emerging technologies (e.g. dedicated sensors such as GPS receivers on public transit vehicles; as well as generic data acquisition devices such as smart phones). The use of data from these new technologies, and the combination of these new sources of data with traditional transportation data, requires that a range of new data analysis methods be developed. Furthermore, the availability of a richer variety of real-time data covering a larger portion of the transportation network provides the opportunity to conduct corridor-wide transportation management which is expected to improve safety, reduce congestion, enhance system reliability, and increase traveller awareness of available transportation options. This research aims to develop and evaluate the methods and tools required to conduct corridor-wide transportation management.
