The chemistry used by consumer good manufacturers to make durable plastic and rubber goods has been developed to satisfy engineering demands, with relatively little attention paid to the health and safety aspects of reaction byproducts. The proposed research will develop methods of preparing durable polymer thermosets that are more enviromentally friendly. Alternatives to rubber products containing harmful organozinc and nitrogen base compounds will be created that meet current engineering standards for dynamic properties and dimensional stability. New formulations for preparing clean thermosets will improve the health and safety aspects of wire coating, reaction injection molding, and foamed polyolefin products.
