A collaborative research program involving Queen's University and Lanxess Inc. (formerly Bayer Polymers, Sarnia, ON) is proposed, whose objective is to develop new methods of chemically modifying isobutylene-based elastomers, and evaluate the resulting materials against the resulting products according to market requirements. The program will generate new synthetic techniques for transforming their existing products into value-added materials.  Novel derivatizations of brominated butyl rubber (BIIR) using viable phase transfer catalysis techniques will be developed and applied toward the preparation of new graft copolymers.  Furthermore, alternative crosslinking strategies, including moisture-curing, imidation of maleated resins, peroxide-mediated vulcanization and amine-epoxide cures will be created.  New processes developed at Queen's will be scaled-up by Lanxess using facilities recently purchased and commissioned for this purpose.
