项目摘要
Supporting multimedia applications has become a formidable task for wireless networks due to limited resources in terms of spectrum, computing capacity, and power supply. In this application, we propose to develop several new mechanisms for addressing issues related to running Peer-to-Peer (P2P) multimedia applications over wireless networks.
New technologies such as cooperative communications and cognitive radio networks (CRN) have been shown to have great potential in improving the efficiency of wireless networks. We propose to create a receiver driven MAC (Medium Access Control) protocol which will empower receivers to select relay nodes. Comparing with existing MACs for cooperative communications, our protocol will provide better support for P2P applications which are based on receiver driven architecture. We will also develop an intelligent MAC scheme for CRNs. The scheme will utilize primary users to track the usage of their licensed spectrum and decide intelligently how to share their licensed spectrum with secondary unlicensed users. At network layer, we will design a cooperation-aware routing protocol which will select next-hop nodes based on more stable links which can provide consistent supports for persistent multimedia applications. We will investigate cross-layer optimization for P2P applications over wireless networks so that network efficiency will be maximized.
In addition to the cross layer mechanisms mentioned above, we will also explore mechanisms which will make overlay-based approaches more efficient by reducing packet losses within wireless networks. In specific, we will develop a new distributed scheduling algorithm based on proportional packet loss ratios. New peer selection algorithms that provide fairness will be designed.
Our proposed mechanisms will help enable P2P multimedia applications over next generation wireless networks with efficient resource utilization and guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS).
