Wireless equipment is now part of our daily life: cellular phones and pagers, cordless computer peripherals, security systems, positioning systems for cars and airplanes, remote devices, and many others. In fact, no one could imagine life without wireless broadband communication systems.
Issues like performance, power consumption, or packaging, are of major importance for designers, while parameters like cost and accessibility to additional services such as text messaging, email, Internet, photo and video camera etc., are crucial for potential customers. Integrating so many different aspects in a single system leads to multi-task design with simultaneous consideration of technical and reliability criteria.
As such, developing next-generation Microwave/Millimetre-wave Wireless systems is an imperative target to help high-tech Canadian companies maintaining their leadership in this strategic area of information technology.
The ever-increasing demand on wireless equipment requires more advanced research to further improve interoperability and enhance performance in terms of higher frequency of operation, smaller size, lower cost, lower consumption, lower noise, higher linearity, etc. However, the above objectives cannot be reached without providing designers with reliable computer-aided design (CAD) tools (in modeling, analysis and optimization) and improving existing circuit performance.
The present proposal is aimed to extend research and developmental activities on next generation wireless communication systems by proposing high-performing circuits, improving device modeling/characterization and circuit analysis capabilities, quantifying/minimizing electromagnetic (EM) affects (multipath, parasitic coupling ...), and designing small printed antennas. It will also give the opportunity to extent collaboration between academia, industry, and research agencies.
