In Canada, satellite communications plays a key role in providing secure and reliable communication services to the general public and to different industries. The objective of this proposal is to address a problem of high interest in satellite communications: the need for quick, cost-effective and reliable "self-install" auto-pointing auto-tuning earth station antenna structures capable of holding Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) systems and precisely capture the full geostationary arc of satellites, thus eliminating the need to send a professional installer to remote sites in order to manually point the antenna to the subscribed satellite service. In this project, major types of motorizing antenna mounts will be examined and their overall performance compared using Ka-band 75 cm parabolic antennas. As last step, integrating designed parts and parts from COTS (Components-Off-The-Shelf) should help deriving a Proof of Concept Prototype.
The proposed research is timely and relevant to SATCOM technologies and innovation which will help facilitating the complexities and difficulties of onsite installation and deployment of VSAT systems. This work is being supported by C-COM Satellite Systems Inc., a publicly traded company on the TSX. It is a leader in the development and deployment of mobile satellite-based technology for the delivery of 2-way high-speed Internet services into vehicles or other mobile structures as well as a leading service provider of reliable 2-way high-speed broadband satellite based Internet services.
