Neural substrates of emotional memory in humans

The goal of this proposal is to explore, using state-of-the-art techniques, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG), the neural mechanisms underlying the influence of emotion on memory in healthy individuals. We will investigate the effects of emotional valence on explicit and implicit forms of memory, suing faces, pictures and words We will also study sex-related and personality differences (such as anxiety) in these processes. The findings from these experiments will not only advance our knowledge about brain function, but they will also have clinical implications, as they should contribute to a better understanding of certain psychiatric disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and phobias.
