One of the most pressing needs within the field of wireless communications is the development of energy-efficient, multi-standard, multi-protocol, fourth generation (4G) wireless radio systems. This need is driven by the requirements for ubiquitous wireless networks and dynamic spectrum allocation in order to address spectrum scarcity. In addition, energy efficiency is also becoming an important factor due to the growing carbon footprint of wireless networks. Addressing this need will require the development of power efficient radios, which operate across multiple frequency bands concurrently, with the power efficiency for each of the frequency bands comparable to that of single-band radios.
The challenge of building energy-efficient adaptive transmitters will be addressed by not only developing new system architectures and circuit topologies, but also by following an integrated research strategy. For this reason, the scope of the project includes semiconductor device characterization and modeling, both of which form an integrated backbone required to enable vast improvements in radio technologies beyond what has been possible with traditional approaches where clear boundaries have existed between device characterization and modeling and microwave circuits and systems design.
This work will be at the forefront of the next generation of wireless technology, without which this sector simply cannot meet the emerging demands. The proposed research program is inspired by the expressed needs of industry in Canada, North America, and overseas. During the course of the research program, the researcher will pursue opportunities for collaboration with academia, industry, and government agencies. A diverse range of partnerships are required to ensure that the project outcomes meet the needs, and is carried out in the most comprehensive, rigorous, and effective manner possible.
