项目摘要

Rapidly rising energy costs and increasingly rigid environmental standards have led to an emerging tread of addressing energy-efficiency aspect of wireless networks. Green wireless networks have many benefits, including reduced operation cost of wireless service providers, extended time of operation of battery powered devices (e.g., mobile phones), and reduced greenhouse gas emission. Despite the potential vision of future generation green wireless networks, several significant research challenges remain to be addressed before widespread deployment of green wireless networks become practical, including cooperative and cognitive wireless communications, cross-layer designs, distributed network resource management, wireless networks powered by the smart grid, and trade-offs of energy efficiency with network performance. The short term objective of this research is to address these challenges by developing, evaluating and demonstrating advanced techniques that make future generation green wireless networks practical and commercially viable. The long term objective of this research is to contribute to the advancement of green wireless networks technologies through the next generation and beyond. The technologies resulting from the proposed research have the potential of making significant impact on the evolution of emerging technical standards or leading to the development of new technical standards of wireless networks. The outcome of the proposed research also provides potential commercial and technology transfer directly to the Canadian industry. The scientific approach will be based on sound research principles involving literature survey and analytical modeling combined with extensive numerical analysis and computer simulations. The research will prepare a number of highly qualified personnel at the postgraduate and undergraduate level to serve the needs of the growing information and communications technologies industry in Canada.
