Rapidly rising energy costs and increasingly rigid environmental standards have led to great demand for next generation green wireless networks, which have a very significant role to play in addressing climate change globally and facilitate low greenhouse gas (GHG) development. The role of green wireless networks includes not only the energy saving and emission reduction in wireless products and services, but also enabling low GHG emissions in other industries, such as smart electric power grid. Despite the potential vision of green wireless networks, several significant research challenges remain to be addressed before widespread deployment of these technologies become practical, including cooperative and cognitive communications, network architectures and protocols, cross-layer designs, and resource management. The proposed research is to address these research challenges by developing and evaluating novel solutions that will make green wireless networks more efficient, effective, and reliable; and thereby make their widespread deployment practical and commercially viable. While cooperative and cognitive radio communications, network architectures and protocols, cross-layer designs, and resource management have been studied for traditional wireless systems, relatively little work has been done to apply these approaches to the development of next generation green wireless networks. In the long term, this project will contribute techniques for designing architectures, protocols, and management strategies in next generation green wireless networks powered by the smart grid. The research methodology of the work will employ mathematical modeling and computer simulations to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed novel schemes. The proposed work will contribute to the advancement of green wireless networks technologies through the next generation and beyond. The project will prepare a number of highly qualified personnel at the postgraduate and undergraduate level to serve the needs of the growing green wireless networks industry in Canada.
