项目摘要

Recent technical advances and wide availability of wireless access technologies and inter-vehicle communication systems are expected to culminate in the integration of different wireless networks such as the IEEE 802.11, 3G, WiMax and sensor networks in next generation vehicular networks. A plethora of applications are envisioned for the next generation of vehicular ad hoc and sensor networks. However, the high-mobility nature of vehicles in a VANet poses intrinsic research challenges on the integration of different wireless technologies. The proposed NSERC Strategic Network project targets the development and integration of communication systems and infrastructures for enabling the deployment of nationwide vehicular networks (VANets) and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This proposed NSERC research project will play an important role in determining how the heterogeneity of wireless technologies and devices attached to vehicles will support seamless mobility and connectivity in the next generation of Vehicular Networks. This proposal takes an interdisciplinary approach that will allow Canadian researchers and industry partners the opportunity to create collaborative involvement in developing key wireless ad hoc, sensor and vehicular network technologies that will pave the way for the wide deployment of intelligent transportation systems across Canada. The expected outcomes of the Network research include a solid understanding of the VANETs and ITS requirements in a heterogeneous wireless environment and the design of integrated architectures and novel robust, secure, fault-tolerant communication technologies to foster the Canadian research in large scale vehicular ad hoc and sensor networks. Moreover, the project will produce highly qualified personnel in the area of wireless networking in general and VANET in particular.
