Sophisticated radio frequency emitters such as modern radars have the ability to adapt their operating mode in real time. Understanding their usage of electromagnetic spectrum and their coexistence with other radio frequency users is important in military and civilian applications. This CRD project focuses on two aspects: 1. Radar Emitter Classification and Estimation: Signals radiated from such emitters depend on the functionality of the emitter, the environment, target returns (if the emitter is a radar) and human operator intervention. In this project, by exploiting probabilistic models for the dynamics of various emitters, our aim is to identify/classify emitters, estimate their operating mode and predict future operating modes. Based on the intercepted signals, such a "model driven" approach facilitates rapid classification of sophisticated multi-function radars and estimation of their mode (search, acquisition, track). 2.Electronic Countermeasures: The proliferation and complexity of modern multimode sensors on mobile platforms greatly complicates electronic countermeasure (ECM) functions, which are actions taken to prevent or reduce the effectiveness of these sensors use of the electromagnetic spectrum. Electronic countermeasures are essential for jamming radars. In civilian applications, understanding the effect of electromagnetic interference on radars is essential for designing radars that can co-exist with other users, and operate efficiently in the presence of systematic interference (deliberate or otherwise). In conventional ECM systems, jamming is done in open loop without exploiting substantial information in subsequent measured data. In the current project, we depart from conventional ECM approaches by adaptively controlling the real time radar jamming signal in response to real time ECM information.
