This CRD program aims at developing and applying a new phosphor material for use in laser phosphor illumination under development by the client company in Ontario. Both commercially available and in house produced raw materials will be used. The design and fabrication of the red-enhanced phosphor will involve both bonding the red phosphor powder to the yttria-alumina-garnet ceramics doped with cerium (YAG:Ce) and converting the in-house produced powder into thin solid plates, 0.2-0.5mm thick, followed by bonding the plates to YAG:Ce substrate. In the second stage of the program, a composite red-enhanced ceramics will be designed and fabricated using a high temperature high pressure sintering process suitable for obtaining 100% dense transparent ceramics suitable for high performance image projection. This new generation of red-phosphor ceramics with increased red-emission will replace the existing broad yellow emitting phosphor (YAG:Ce) known to be deficient in red color. The HQP will be in the position to develop skills in the design and fabrication of a new generation of ceramics capable of emitting red color that can be used not only in image projection but also in high efficiency light emitting diodes and lasers.
