Process optimization of high toughness, high strength zirconia ceramics for resistance welding

The proposed research is concerned with the optimization of the microstructure and mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics for resistant welding and bio implants with performance superior to those of existing ceramics. Specifically, the proposed research aims as identifying the key composition and processing variables and use these to optimize the properties of these ceramics. The optimum microstructure and processing steps will be identified and a new set of samples will be made and tested. Also, number of real size weld/guide pins will be fabricated and tested under actual resistant welding conditions in an industrial setting. If this proves successful, the study will be extended to include fabrication and testing of samples suitable for applications as bio implants and wear resistant parts.
