Petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) test kits are used as screening tools to reduce costs and improve turnaround times during environmental assessments and cleanups at contaminated sites. Current commercially available PHC test kits are not specific and are susceptible to interferences from other organic compounds. In addition, Canadian clean up criteria of hydrocarbons are dependent on the specific fraction of hydrocarbon. This proposal will use a novel approach to modify current PHC soil screening test kit technologies to improve specificity and eliminate interferences. Solid phase extraction will be utilized to take advantage of differences in volatility, solubility, polarity and octanol water coefficient in the PHC individual compounds which make up each fraction. The results of this research will allow Malroz Engineering Inc. to improve on site
characterization and quantitation of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil using field test kits.
