Endovascular navigation of magnetic drug eluting beads for liver cancer therapy: feasibility and optimization

HepatoCellular Carcinoma (HCC) (liver cancer) is the fifth most common cancer in the world and third cause of cancer mortality and its incidence is increasing worldwide and intra-arterial therapies are now the preferred therapeutic approach for advanced HCC. Unlike other existing interventional methods, we propose a non-invasive treatment concept which consists in injecting special drug-carrying biodegradable magnetic carriers being navigated directly to the site being treated using a clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner in order to enhance the treatment of liver cancer. We have previously proven its feasibility in a rabbit model. However, the technology must first be adapted to the human scale before considering clinical translation, which is the main goal of this project.
