This project aims to remove the main barrier to market for a new type of atmospheric leak detection system that detects the presence and operational origin of methane, greenhouse, and toxic fugitive gas emissions from energy developments, conventional and unconventional. This main barrier to market is currently the cost and the need for highly trained staff to operate the system that is currently used to carry out these fugitive emission surveys. Therefore, the goal of this project is to substantially reduce the costs (hardware, manpower) of our detection technique while also providing more continuous data for the end user, and still exceed the leak resolution capability of commercially available mobile survey systems.
This technique has the potential to allow operators to identify, and therefore eliminate or reduce, fugitive emissions of gases like methane, which is over 20 times as powerful as CO2 in its greenhouse potential.
