项目摘要

Ventilation openings allow the transmission of beneficial ventilation air, but also transmit detrimental noise, leading to the need for acoustical- (sound-attenuating) ventilating openings. Their airflow performance is characterized by the variation of the resulting airflow with the applied air pressure. Measurements of airflow are typically performed in high airflow-velocity conditions. However, the application of these products in naturally-ventilated buildings is in low-velocity conditions. The performance characteristics at high velocities do not accurately predict the performance at low velocities. VanAir Design Inc. is an architectural-product design company that is developing a line of acoustical-ventilating panel products, including doors and walls. Some of VanAir Design's products are designed specifically for sustainable, naturally-ventilated buildings. To understand the effective ventilation behaviour of these panels, and their design for high performance in realistic natural-ventilation conditions, VanAir Design must understand their low-velocity airflow characteristics and performance, as well as the acoustical performance. To gain this understanding is the objective of the proposed research. It will provide fundamental, new knowledge on the low-velocity performance of ventilation openings. It will lead to the development of acoustical-ventilating panel products, consistent with the evolution of sustainable-building design trends, promoting more sustainable buildings by aiding practices that reduce the energy consumptions of their ventilation systems and improving indoor environmental quality for building inhabitants.
