The equipment requested is a portable, universal, multi-purpose, acoustical measurement and analysis system with sound-intensity measurement capability and multi-purpose analysis software.  Software options will allow sound-level-meter functionality, real-time and FFT analysis, sound-intensity measurement, building-acoustics analysis, transfer-function analysis, and reverberation time determination using pseudo-random noise signals.  This system will give the UBC Acoustics & Noise Research Group a reliable, portable, state-of-the-art measurement and analysis capability with greatly improved functionality over existing, obsolete equipment.  It will support all current and future research, including room sound-field characterization, measurement of the impulse response of rooms, measurement of the insertion loss of ventilators and noise-control measures in 'green' buildings,  and measurement of the effectiveness of active-noise control systems.  It will form the basic equipment for a UBC/BCIT green-roof sound-transmission-measurement facility currently being planned.       The acoustical environment in a workroom has a direct effect on the health, well-being and productivity of the workers.  The direct and indirect socio-economic costs of such problems can be enormous.  'Green' building is essential to world sustainability.  'Green' buildings have particular acoustical problems which lead to great occupant dissatisfaction.  The problems must be investigated and resolved.  'Green' roofs have potential for noise control that must be investigated.  Noise control traditionally involves passive methods.  The future of noise control involves active methods.  The proposed research will provide the knowledge, predictive tools and noise-control measures to allow the acoustical environment in workrooms to be optimized at the design stage.
