The growth of aging population and the increasing demand for high quality healthcare result in significant
burden of overload on existing medical systems and hospital facilities. More efficient deployment of health
care resources and health care consumer preferences dictate a trend to increased safe and effective delivery of
care outside of traditional hospital or health care clinics settings. Electronic Health (eHealth) has been proposed
as a promising paradigm by integrating advanced information processing and communication technologies.
Due to lack of dedicated spectrum, limited network capacity, and potential competition among patients for
resources, achieving reliable data transmission end (patient) to end (remote center) is critical for the
implementation of eHealth systems.
The proposed project will address company-specific problem to achieve reliable and prioritized information
dissemination in wireless eHealth systems between gateways (patients) and base stations. The proposed
research addresses significant and technically challenging issues in delivering priority-sensitive medical data in
the presence of competition. In particular, this project will first introduce a pricing-based resource-sharing
architecture to achieve medical-grade priority based on the importance of medical signals, and then develop
two resource-sharing schemes based on game theory approaches under both the static and dynamic pricing
scenarios.
The project will develop networking protocols and control algorithms critical for pervasive medical
applications, even in a highly competitive network scenario. It is expected that the research outcomes of this
study will further enhance the strength of Arterial Stiffness Inc. (ASI) in their development of future
technologies in eHealth and decent protocols for more efficient diagnoses of arterial stiffness and other general
health applications. This cutting-edge research will also enable the development of new products that will
foster a vital competitive edge for Canadian healthcare industry in the international market place.
