There has been tremendous interest in Big Data and analytics. Sphere3D, headquartered in Ontario and publicly listed on the NASDAQ Exchange, is a Canadian company looking to research how Big Data and analytics can positively affect its bottom line. Its keystone offering is the Glassware 2.0 platform, which delivers virtualization of applications and enables movement of applications from a physical PC or workstation to a virtual environment on premises and/or from the cloud. Sphere3D seeks to innovate upon its products and services offerings in the current and future business context of Big Data availability, and growth in the analytics software market. To that end, in 2014, it acquired Overland Storage, a provider of unified data management and data protection solutions. The aim of this project is to collaborate with Sphere3D on research that can lead to innovative Big Data and business analytics solutions that it can offer its clients.
Given that much of the data that Sphere3D stores for its clients are in unstructured or even unindexed formats, and may be spread throughout its data infrastructure, just preparing data for analytics by its clients represents a significant opportunity. Prof. Henry Kim and his research team at York University are proposing to work with Sphere3D under the NSERC Engage grant to apply context-aware ontologies to the challenge of collecting, federating, and preparing data for business analytics by Sphere3D's clients.
In the long run, successful investments in business analytics by Canadian firms will be an important driver of competitive advantage. According to Porter's Diamond of National Advantage, there are several determinants of a nation's competitiveness that can be shaped over time. Factor conditions that examine human, material, knowledge, and capital resources are extremely important. By investing in the field of business analytics, Canada will be developing its capabilities which will lead to increased competitiveness and innovation, and this project seeks to do its part for Sphere3D so that in addition it will ultimately lead to increased employment for resident Canadians domestically and internationally.
