Rare earth elements (REEs) and their compounds are among the strategic materials that are extensively used in the production of many technologically advanced products, such as wind turbines, electric and hybrid cars, automative catalytic convertors, and hand-held electronic devices. The demand for REEs is projected to rise by ~40% by 2016. Because of their increasing global demand, finding new sources for these materials is highly of interest. One of the sources for these elements is the phosphate ore that is being used for the production of phosphoric acid in the fertilizer producing companies. After the phosphate rock is reacted with sulphuric acid to form phosphoric acid, a by-product, called phosphogypsum will be prodcued and it contains some amounts of REEs that come from the phosphate rock. Agrium Inc., is a fertilizer company, located in Alberta, Canada that has stacks of phosphogypsum as their by-product. In the current proposal, we propose to investigate the recovery of REEs from Agrium's phosphogypsum by a hydrometallurgical acid leaching process. The developed process will provide a new source for rare earth materials. Not Only will it provide a new route for processing an industrial waste stream to produce valuable materials, but also it will enable the conversion of this waste to gypsum product, which can be used as construction materials. The proposed project will benefit Canada; because it helps Canadian producer satisfy their demand for rare earth materials. The proposed research has a potential for commercialization, and we will look at the scaling-up possibilities and implementation by Agrium and other phosphoric acid production companies with phosphogypsum by-product.
