The increasing need for bandwidth due to voice and data streaming in the telecommunications industry has
resulted in growing demand for high efficiency rectifiers for powering telecom networks. In the world of
telecom power rectifiers, power density and power efficiency, as well as the total cost of ownership have been
the key drivers for technological advancements. Over the past decade, research and development in power
semiconductors has seen significant progress, and this is paving way for new topological developments for
rectifiers with reduced losses. In light of the current status of technology and Alpha's plan in keeping up with
worldwide competition, the main goal of this ENGAGE proposal is to initiate a research collaboration to assist
Alpha in developing its next-generation high efficiency PFC rectifiers for telecom power systems. Through
detailed characterization and modelling of the devices as well as design and evaluation of the circuits, the
outcomes of the proposed project are expected to lay a solid foundation essential to the design of a
commercially competitive PFC module achieving 99% efficiency and above.
