This proposal is an extension of an existing NSERC Engage project with Ballard, titled "Hybrid PowertrainTest Bed for Heavy-Duty Fuel Cell Bus". The proposed project is mainly aimed at developing an optimaldesign framework for the heavy-duty hybrid powertrain by incorporating fuel cell durability, dynamics, andefficiency into the design, and to build a hardware platform for research on design and development ofadvanced operation schemes and energy management methods. In this CRD proposal, Ballard is seeking todevelop a design framework which enables the characterization of fuel cell performance and durability undervarious operating conditions. The proposed framework optimizes the sizes of the fuel cell and the battery toachieve minimum hydrogen consumption as well as the cost of the powertrain. System-level controller forpower and energy management will be designed to minimize stressors on the fuel cell and maximize itslifetime. This CRD will assist in implementing the design framework by developing component models andsizing optimization algorithms, and physically implementing power converters and control schemes for thehybrid fuel cell powertrain. The optimum sizing of components and energy management scheme is the mosteffective way to extend the lifetime of the fuel cell by minimizing voltage and dynamic stressors.
