英文摘要
Concrete pavers are a popular hardscaping product as they create attractive surfaces and are long-lasting.
Increasingly pavers are being used for more than just aesthetics but are design to be permeable and allow for
rainwater to infiltrate into underlying soils. Permeable interlocking concrete pavers (PICP) are an on-site
engineered stormwater management system. Site level stormwater management controls can mitigate flooding
risks by restoring naturalized processes such as infiltration and providing distributed storage of stormwater. In
order to ensure the long-term functionality of PICP there is a need to address installer related issues and to
develop well defined standards and guidelines. Over time PICP losses its ability to infiltrate stormwater as
surface openings gradually become clogged with sediment. Cost effective maintenance practices to rejuvenate
surface infiltration capacity still need to be developed. In this project the Canada Masonry Design Centre will
convert 175 sqm of existing walkways to PICP. The experimental pavement will be used to investigate the the
impact of stormwater detention time for PICP on quantity control of stormwater, water quality concerns from
the 'first flush' after construction as well as performance in the first winter after construction. Three detention
practices will be tested: (1) free release, (2) twenty-four hour detention, (3) forty-eight hour detention. Results
of this research will be integrated into draft installation and operation standards to be developed by CMDC.
