英文摘要
The company, GSS Integrated Energy, is investigating Smart grid technology as a key part of small-scale electrical grids, called micro-grids. Smart grid technologies are computer controls that are used to automate the pieces inside an electrical grid, whether it is large-scale or small-scale. One of the objectives of the project is to tackle technical challenges and to quantify benefits of implementing smart-grid and micro-grid technologies in power systems with a focus on renewable energy and energy conservation. Controlling the smart grid components is complex and involve coordinating electrical loads and power generators, tracking electricity use for billing or crediting electrical suppliers on the micro-grid, and connecting the micro-grid to the utility. Control schemes specific to the case studies will be created and reported. Modeling and design tools developed in this project will be primarily used by the company to develop and design their products. Such results can also be used for both practical and theoretical power system designers to explore possibilities for alternative and renewable energy generation and other innovative technologies. In this research, fully realized systems and the developed control systems will be compared to the recommendations and control schemes within the case study reports. The result of this research will help the widespread installations of micro-grids and smart grid in Canada that when constructed properly such smart and renewable microgrids will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will reduce demand on the electrical utility, ensuring good service for those still using the utility.
