The objective of this research is to improve and optimize the design of an innovative curtain wall system developed by uNIPI Canada Inc. by evaluating the moisture and thermal performance of the system through laboratory testing and numerical modeling. In uNIPI CANADA Inc.'s constructive system, the building structure and envelope sub-systems are removable without using any cranes or skilled labor workers. By imbedding innovative connectors in glulam wood beams and columns it is easy to build up and to disassemble the structure, which makes uNIPI constructive system a simple, light-weight, efficient solution for easy replacement of glazing systems or façade panels. Laboratory tests will be performed to investigate the water tightness performance and 2D heat transfer simulations will be carried out to evaluate and optimize its thermal performance. The proposed research will result in practical solutions for a high performance innovative curtain wall system and promote its application in small and relocatable buildings. The advantages of being easily replaced when failures occur or change of corporate image is needed will substantially reduce the cost for maintenance during the building's service life. This research will contribute to Canada's economy by help introduce a new technology to Canadian curtain wall market.
